We Cave experienced 3 cases of atopic cataracts.
In 2 cases, there was a past history of atopic dermatitis and another case within the family, but at present no atopic phenomena were noted. In one case, although no past history of atopic dermatitis was obtained, we thought of this case as atopic cataract because of the peculiar lens opacity for atopic cataract. which was previously reported by Sautter. Atopic dermatitis has a tendency of spontneous remission as the patient grows older.
Previous history of skin may not be obtained, particularly in the infantile type of atopic dermatitis.
In a survey of literature, many observers reported about postoperative courses and operative results of atopic cataract in different ways.
We performed 2 extracapsular and 1 intracapsular cataract extraction under local anesthesia. Postoperative course were uneventful, and excellent operative results were obtained in all 3 eyes operated.
We also performed the biopsy of intracapsular extracted lens, and our findings were exactly the same as the other form of subcapsular cataract. we are of the opinion that the type of surgery (intracapsular or extracapsular extraction) could be employed depending on the patient´s age and ocular conditions, so far as no atopic phenomena is present.
